Solar thermal energy systems can turn the energy of the sun into heat for your home or business. A solar water heating system will be able to provide heat to your home by using heat energy from the sun to heat water than can then be piped around your home or business. Additionally, solar thermal energy systems can cut down on the need to use your boiler or immersion heater for your hot water needs by pre-heating your water on sunny days.

How does a solar thermal energy system work and how will it benefit my home or business?

Solar thermal energy systems use specialized panels, known as collectors to collect heat from the sun. The collector panels are usually mounted on the roof of your home or business, or in any location that receives unobstructed sunlight. Water is piped through these collector panels in small tubes, where it is heated by energy from the sun. This water is then stored in an insulated tank indoors. A boiler or immersion heater can be used as a back-up to heat the water further to reach the right temperature.

There are two main types of solar water heating panels, the larger variety where water is piped through tubes, or the smaller flat plate collectors, as they are known. These smaller collectors can be fixed to individual roof tiles or integrated into the roof of your building. As well as heating your water, larger solar panels can also be arranged to provide small amount of additional heat to warm your home or business.
